A Rare Book
An intriguing leather binding,
a mystery. Busy, overwhelmed, uninterested,
A puzzling exterior
demanding a second glance,
no, a long, lingering look.
A coarse cover weathered with time,
yet a spine smooth, strong,
A story concealed within;
a soul unexposed, a spirit neglected,
a heart encased,
A protected hide responding to
warm curious fingers.
Set it down. Walk away.
Leave the enigma unexplored, unread.
Crease the spine, Expose the body.
Chapters, pages, words, pauses...
all are tethered, tightly.
Gentle, resolute acceptance
demanded as each singular
thought is released from its page.

An Apple’s First Fall
Spinning by its stem,
the Red Delicious twirls.
The dancing fruit is tempted
by fingers of a school girl.
He spies the crimson ball
set on an ink-stained stage,
prancing directed by a doll
of a most precarious age.
Twisted by intent,
the sturdy stem snaps.
The daring fruit is sent
into the uniformed lap.
His fingers grip the stiff, white chalk,
And turning to the board, they write
the simple words of Paradise Lost,
the blind man’s poem of a hellish fight.
He hears hungry whispers from the Snake–
A virgin core holds the fertile seed,
her tender flesh is yours to take,
Now follow Lucifer’s lead.
